Mozilla is doing tests on a new VPN service for Firefox called Firefox Private Network that helps users’ privacy not being integrated by trackers and hackers while they are using public Wi-Fi. Mozilla Firefox, or Firefox, is an open-source website browser, which was developed by Mozilla Corporation along with Mozilla Foundation. At present, the Firefox browser extension is being tested again. It is the first new project of the Firefox Test Pilot program. In addition, for Mozilla, this move could potentially offer some financial wiggle room.

Last week in the US, this virtual private network was launched as a desktop beta. Even though it is released only on desktops, the VPN is expected to be available also for mobile users. The new VPN service is able to protect personal data such as financial information and addresses of websites that you have visited, as well as hide your activities on the web when you are on public Wi-fi networks. According to Mozilla, this service also helps users to mask their IP addresses from any third-party tracker around websites. The way it works is similar to any other VPN service.

At the moment, this VPN service is free for users. However, Mozilla shared that there as part of the test, it would also figure out potential options for pricing. It cost Rs 712 monthly for a VPN service in its previous test.

This move is the company's attempt to push privacy protection on the Internet, but it could also give Mozilla some financial independence. Its earnings are from Google and other search ad deals. Mozilla is paid for leading search queries of Firefox users to Google. After that, next to the results are ads presented by Google. Mozilla and other browser makers usually get a piece of these proceeds. As a result, an additional way for Mozilla to earn money is to develop a VPN for users who are willing to pay for better privacy.
