Narendra Modi, the most tech-savvy prime minister India has ever had said on Twitter on Monday (March 2) that he was thinking of quitting social media.

This means he is considering giving up on his hugely popular accounts on YouTube, Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram. However, he did not elaborate on why he had such a thought.

This kind of mystery has fueled speculations over the reason behind the consideration. Some people guess the Tweet is just a gimmick while others think that India would soon have its own social media platform. About the second possibility, we have reason to believe it might happen as when Modi moved to an India-made platform, millions of his followers would be inclined to follow him.

In May last year, Narendra Modi ranked second on the list of the world’s most-followed politicians on social media with approximately 111 million followers on Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook. This ranking is made public by SEMrush, a visibility management and marketing analytics company in Boston.

The last record made at 9:45 PM yesterday (March 2) his number of followers on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram reached 53 million, 44 million, and 35 million respectively.

Modi is known as a politician who never holds conferences and usually avoids answering questions. So many have regarded his activeness on social media as a way for him to keep the conversation one-way.

PM Narendra Modi has also been criticized for giving support for the wrong kind of social media users, especially on Twitter.

And as with his other announcements made on social media platforms, this thought has received diverse reception from his followers. Only minutes after the Tweet was made public, the hashtag #NoSir became trending on Twitter with a large number of Indians told him not to give up on his accounts.
