On March 1, Prime Minister Narendra Modi of India arrived at AIIMS to receive his first dose of the Made-in-India COVID-19 vaccine. In his Twitter post, he announced his vaccination, expressed his gratitude to healthcare workers and scientists while encouraging eligible Indian citizens to get vaccinated.
Nurse P Niveda from Puducherry was the one to administer the COVAXIN from Bharat Biotech to the Prime Minister. He also posted a photo of himself wearing an Assamese “gamocha” while taking his first dose of the vaccine with a smile on his face.

While many people commended him for leading by example, others quickly criticized him for not wearing a mask while being injected with the vaccine jab.
Despite this, PM Modi is now one of the few prominent world leaders to have got the COVID-19 vaccine. In the Group of 20, the Prime Minister of India is the ninth leader to be administered with at least the first dose.
Among the first was 71-year-old Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. US President, Joe Biden, 18 also got his vaccination. In Israel, Netanyahu was the first to receive the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine.

Meanwhile, Biden had his Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine in December 2020, a month before his official inauguration to become the 46th president of the United States. His vaccination was on live television, in order to counter the country’s vaccine hesitancy trend, in marked contrast to former President Donald Trump’s mixed messages. Some reports suggest that Donald and Melania Trump quietly received the COVID-19 vaccine in January before leaving office.
