We are getting closer and closer to the Tokyo Olympics 2020. And Tokyo, as one of the most modern cities on the planet, will bring a whole lot of new technologies and experience to spectators and participants.
From using recycled e-waste to make medals to robots to assist audiences and participants, the 2020 Olympics will sure be one of the world’s most technologically-advanced.
3D Athlete Tracking
3DAT or 3D Athlete Tracking is a computer vision solution that is brand new and never-been-seen-before . The technology captures the attending athlete’s form and motion using 4 pan-tilt articulating cameras.
The tech uses AI to offer better performance estimation after analyzing the biomechanics of the players. Relay and sprinting events are where the tech is being deployed to provide spectators in the stadium and at home with real-time data during the broadcast.
Connected using 5G
5G network with its blazing-fast connectivity will be used to connect people, binding everything together. 5G will not only help swiftly share the content of the event but also provide players and spectators with seamless connectivity to efficiently stay connected.
Going All-In With Virtual Reality
With so many venues assigned for each specific event, it can be quite cumbersome to train the ground staff. However, virtual reality is being used by the International Olympics Committee to train the staff for important events. This will not only help with the training process but also lower the costs.
VR will be used in some of the game broadcasts such as track & field, beach volleyball, boxing and gymnastics, and the opening and closing ceremony as well. So, if you can’t come to Tokyo to attend the Olympics, you get to live the experience right from your living room that is in the case you already own a VR headset.
Created music using AI
The 2020 Olympics’ theme track was created using AI using 1,000 different sound samples related to sports, Japanese daily lives, culture, and nature.
With these samples, the AI put together five different rhythms. The beat consists of two parts, the base rhythm (the call) and the response rhythm (the response). The call part will be played to audiences. And they will follow the response part by clapping their hands to hype up the atmosphere.
Neoface Facial Recognition
The 2020 Olympics will surely see the attendance of a lot of people, from players, organizers to support staff and the media. It is not convenient and unsafe to use traditional security authentication with ID cards.
Instead, the International Olympics Committee will use what is called Neoface facial recognition. The tech is from NEC technologies and uses computational prowess of Intel. By instantaneously identifying more than 300,000 people, the tech will help crowd management.
Most of the mentioned above technologies are deploying Intel’s computational prowess, facial recognition, artificial intelligence and virtual reality to be exact.
