You may have heard at least once of someone getting hurt when their smartphones exploded because of overheating. These kinds of incidents are horrible as they make us feel like we are holding a ticking bomb in our hands.
However, this problem will soon be solved with the new invention from Australia's Deakin University. Their research goes back to 2016 and in the last few years, they have dedicated to energy storage technology. Their new battery is called BatTRI-Hub and it has some really handy properties.
The lithium metal anode featured in the battery can deliver up to 50% more energy than today’s power cells in smartphones. Another prized feature is the ionic liquid electrolyte, which won’t catch on fire.
According to the director of the research hub Professor Patrick Howlett, BatTRI-Hub is different from the batteries used by Tesla or Samsung in the sense that it will not explode when being heated up. In fact, the battery performs even better with high temperature so there is no need for a cumbersome and expensive cooling system anymore.
The heat-loving aspect of the battery might not be so useful for smartphone users but it can be of tremendous help for electric vehicles where heat-dissipating has been a major problem. A typical smartphone user will love the no-exploding feature more.
However, that leads us to another question, if this battery loves heat so much, how is it going to work when we are in a cold region?
