You may have heard of Niantic, the company behind the world’s phenomenon Pokémon Go. The game’s success comes down to the support of the massive number of Pokémon lovers all over the globe, and also the fresh approach Niantic offers, which involves the real world.
In the latest titles, Harry Potter: Wizards Unite, Niantic tries to gain the same global outreach that Pokémon Go has had. This time, the new game caters to a no-less-huge community, the Potterhead.
We will have a similar way to play Harry Potter: Wizards Unite as Pokémon Go. Players will have to navigate the world around them and accomplish missions, take on a fight with enemies, and gain rewards.
If you want to try the game right away, here is everything you need to know to have a smooth start:
What Is The Story Behind Wizards Unite?
The game takes place after the grand battle in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. As part of the Statute of Secrecy Task Force, you will have to look into a mysterious Calamity and find out about the secrets of the incident from the items you found along the way. This is the extent of what we have on the game’s storyline.
How Can I Download And Set Up The Game?
Harry Potter: Wizards Unite is available on both iOS and Android. The setup process is quite easy as all you have to do is to follow the instructions on the screen.
How Does One Play The Game?
What users have to do in this game is to uncover the mystery around the Calamity and find items in an augmented world. So in reality, users will have to take the phone with the game to the outside world and find signs of magical disturbances. Essentially, this game is all about encountering magical traces and these disturbances.
All of the traces fall into either one of the two categories, sometimes both: Foundable and Confoundable. For example, you may see Hagrid, who belongs to the former group. He is under the attack of a dementor, which is a Confoundable.
When you tap on Hagrid, you will see a magical-exposure clock, which shows players the threat level of the opponent as well as information of how hard it is to defeat him. What you have to do now is to win against the dementor to save Hagrid.
As in the wizarding world, the wand is among the most important tools in Harry Potter: Wizards Unite. When you encounter a Confoundable, you will have to position three stars on the phone’s display and find the stars on the body of the magical entity. To do that, you can move the divide until the stars are positioned on the same line. Next, you will cast a spell by tracing the hints with your finger. This is the game’s version of waving the wand in a particular pattern to cast a spell in the story.
When the Foundable is freed, they or it will need to be returned to where they belong. In the case of Hagrid, he has to go back to Hogwarts grounds. After that, you, the player, will get rewards and be leveled up.
Apart from the Confoundables, you may have to fight with Dark Wizards. According to some early reports, the duet with these enemies are fast-paced, and players have to switch swiftly between defensive and offensive spells to win. When you fail to cast a spell properly, you will be penalized.
As with Pokémon Go, Harry Potter: Wizards Unite also has several locations for players to visit to find the Calamity, rewards, and more. Some of them are Greenhouses, Inns, and Fortresses. While in Pokémon Go, you will have to fight with other players at a Gym, in this game, you can collaborate with up to three other players to defeat Death Eaters. The battles take place in real time with other players in the shared area.
What Items Are Available In The Game?
Potions
After you reach level 4, Potions will be unlocked. While you go around the map, you can see ingredients for making potions positioned according to the weather conditions. Potions can help players heal themselves, improve spell-casting, and find traces. The suitcase icon at the bottom center is where you can find the icon for Potions. You can make potions from the ingredients you have found in the game.
Portkeys
In the story, the term portkey is for objects that can teleport people to a different location. In this game, a portkey will do the same thing but only virtually. You use it when you have to travel to another location to complete a task. It will take the shape of a triangular box. When you find one, you will have to cover a certain distance to charge it; you may recognize the same requirement in Pokémon Go when you have to hatch eggs. When you complete the mission, you will be returned to the initial place.
Professions
After you reach level 6, you can choose for yourself a profession. Your options range from Auror, professor, to Magizoologist. For each occupation, the player will possess different advantages. For example, an Auror will excel at combat and defending against the dark arts, a magizoologist can work with magical beasts and will be of great help to teammates, and a professor is somewhere in between.
Harry Potter: Wizards Unite is now available to download and play in 130 nations. The critical reaction of the game is pretty positive, many people praise the way the game makes use of augmented reality.
