At CES 2020, Samsung announced two new devices of the S and Note series: Galaxy S10 Lite and Galaxy Note 10 Lite. This is a very odd move because Samsung has not launched a "Lite" version of its flagship phones in a long time. And indeed, both the S10 Lite and Note 10 Lite are two devices that raise many questions.
Many people would assume that the S10 Lite and Note 10 Lite are simply a watered-down version of their premium siblings but in reality, things are not so simple.
Both the S10 Lite and Note 10 Lite have 6.7-inch Infinity-O screens with a camera hole in the center. This makes the S10 Lite different from the rest of the S10 with the cut-out on the upper right corner. Another paradox is that the S10 Lite has a larger screen size than the S10+ (6.5 inches) despite being a Lite version. The S10 Lite and Note 10 Lite displays are also inferior to that of the S10 and Note 10 when it is not curved and has a lower resolution of 1080x2400.
Moving to the back, the S10 Lite and Note 10 Lite look completely different from its expensive siblings. Instead of being placed vertically or horizontally, the camera clusters of these two devices are square. This is also the design that is rumored to appear on the upcoming Galaxy S20. So, in essence, the S10 Lite and Note 10 Lite have a more trendy design than its elder siblings.
However, it is a pity to say that the back of the S10 Lite and Galaxy Note 10 Lite is not made of glass like other high-end Samsung devices, but is made of plastic. It feels relatively light when holding them and does not feel premium like other Galaxy S and Galaxy Note smartphones, but more like an A-series device.
Normally, the S and Note series of Samsung in the same year usually have quite similar configurations, especially the processor. However, the S10 Lite and Note 10 Lite use a completely different chipset. If the S10 Lite is equipped with the powerful Snapdragon 855 chipset, the Note 10 Lite gets power from the Exynos 9810 chipset from 2018, which is seen on Note 9. Both devices are equipped with 6 / 8GB of RAM and 128GB internal storage.
Things get even more different when it comes to cameras, as the S10 Lite and Note 10 Lite have very different camera systems. If Note 10 Lite has a triple camera system including the 12MP f / 1.7 main camera, 12MP f / 2.4 telephoto camera and 12MP f / 2.2 ultrawide camera; the S10 Lite has a 48MP f / 2.0 main camera, a 12MP f / 2.2 ultrawide camera and a 5MP f / 2.4 macro photography camera. In particular, the S10 Lite supports Super Steady OIS anti-vibration technology - yet another oddity, as even the full-featured S10 and Note 10 do not have this technology.
As such, users will be forced to trade or choose the higher resolution cameras, macro camera, and Super Steady OIS technology with S10 Lite, or choose the telephoto camera and main camera with a large aperture of Note 10 Lite.
As for the battery, both devices have a 4,500mAh battery. As such, the S10 Lite and Note 10 Lite also have a longer battery life than the S10 + (4,100mAh) and Note 10+ (4,300mAh), especially when combined with a lower-resolution display.
Even the prices of the S10 Lite and Note 10 Lite are odd. The European market of S10 Lite and Note 10 Lite are priced at Euro 649 (around Rs. 51,200) and Euro 599 (around Rs. 47,300) respectively, witnessing for the first time a Galaxy S device having a higher price than the Galaxy Note. Samsung India is expected to launch the Galaxy S10 Lite and Note 10 Lite in India in the upcoming weeks. Flipkart already shared a teaser confirming that the Galaxy S10 Lite release date in the country is 23 January.
