OPPO A92 Review: Decent All-Around Phone, But Lacks The Firepower
Karamchand Rameshwar - Feb 25, 2021
OPPO A92 is a new offering in the mid-range segment. Just like its sibling, it is a great all-around smartphone but lacks the firepower to take on its rivals.

OPPO A92 was announced last month in Malaysia last month and it is expected to make its debut in India soon. The most noticeable upgrade on the latest A-series representative is its exterior appearance. OPPO uses the popular punch-hole style on this phone. It has a 6.5-inch display that occupies nearly the entire front with a rate of 90.5%, supports Full-HD + resolution, and uses an IPS LCD panel. Other key OPPO A92 specs include Snapdragon 665 SoC, 8GB RAM, 48MP quad rear cameras, and more.
The OPPO A92 also delivers great sound quality thanks to super-linear Dual Stereo Speakers, creating a surround sound effect. The speaker layout is similar to the flagship Find X2, one at the top and one at the bottom.
The back of this phone looks great with a large rectangular camera cluster and interesting mirrored striations that radiate out from the camera array in the fashion of a streaking star. It only appears if you angle it correctly under the light but does lend it a unique aesthetic touch. For photography, the device owns a quad-camera array at the back, including a 48MP main camera + an 8MP ultra-wide-angle camera + a 2MP monochrome camera + a 2MP portrait camera. The front camera fits inside the punch-hole with 16MP resolution, allowing 1080p video recording at 30fps.
OPPO offers three color options for the smartphone: Twilight Black (the one we are using in this review), Stream White, and Aurora Purple. The frame of the product is painted with the same color as the back. One strange thing is that its predecessor OPPO A91 is equipped with an under-display fingerprint sensor while the A92 only gets a side-mounted one.
The next difference between the OPPO A92 and its predecessor is the chipset. Instead of using Helio P70 and Mali-G72 MP3 GPU, the Chinese brand goes for a Snapdragon 665 chipset and Adreno 610 GPU. This change brings excitement to users, especially those who love to play games because Qualcomm processors are usually better optimized for gaming and energy management. However, the Snapdragon 665 still seems a bit lackluster, considering the fact that many of its rivals have been equipped with Snapdragon 720G or Snapdragon 730G, both of which are much more powerful than the Snapdragon 665. Even the more-affordable Redmi Note 9 Pro is equipped with a Snapdragon 720G chipset.
This phone has Bluetooth 5.0, which is a newer standard than Bluetooth 4.2 on the old version. Other than that, specs of the OPPO A92 are pretty much the same as the OPPO A91, including 8GB RAM, 128GB storage, microSD card slot, and dual-SIM slots.
Another big change on OPPO A92 is that the battery capacity is now increased to 5,000 mAh, which is a significant boost from 4,025 mAh of the A91. This helps the device to last longer for the battery-consuming tasks that are frequently used by many users such as playing games, watching movies, streaming content to social networks or filming, taking photos.
On this phone, OPPO no longer uses its VOOC 3.0 20W fast charging technology and instead switch to the standard 18W fast charging tech for this product. Losing 2W, in return, OPPO A92020 is compatible with Quick Charge 2.0 / 3.0 adapters, which are very popular in the market.
For now, the handset hasn’t made its way to India yet. Therefore, we don’t have the OPPO A92 price in India at the moment. However, we believe that it should be around Rs. 20,000, which is slightly higher than that of the OPPO A52 launched in India a few days ago. If the handset indeed comes to India, OPPO might need to apply much more aggressive pricing since smartphones in the same price range with the OPPO A92 like POCO X2, Realme X2, Realme 6 Pro, Redmi K20 appear to be a better option, especially if users are looking for smartphones that offer a high level of performance.
If you are not interested in this phone, you can check out the OPPO A92s. The handset gets a 120Hz display, MediaTek Dimension 800 SoC, 5G connectivity, and 48MP quad rear cameras. Sadly, for now, the OPPO A92s price in India is also unavailable.
