Among all segments in the smartphone market, the mid-range segment is the most fierce one. And the Chinese players are one of the toughest players. Realme, in particular, has been launching many smartphones with impressive specs.
One of Realme’s latest mid-ranger launched on March 13, 2020, the Realme 6 Pro is the fight straight to Xiaomi. The smartphone comes with a stunning design, the top specs as well as an exceptionally versatile camera setup.
Realme has been consistent with updating its designs while also remaining a sense of familiarity. The Realme 6 Pro sees no difference. The most noticeable change that Xiaomi made to the smartphone is in the selfie camera by switching to the cut-out style.
The display is bigger at 6.6-inches with Full HD+, a 2400 x 1080 resolution, and a 90Hz refresh rate, making it much smoother scrolling through the interface as well as gaming. The Realme 6 Pro, unlike some other smartphones, shows no hint of jankiness with its refresh rate.
The contrast and black levels aren’t as good as the AMOLED screen. But don’t worry, the quality difference isn’t huge. More importantly, the smartphone’s color reproduction is worth the money while the colors look natural.
There is not much that you can complain about the screen. Being a Realme phone, the panel is punchy but slightly oversaturated. However, you can tune this using the display settings. Brightness levels are more than sufficient when you are outdoor.
The fingerprint scanner is embedded into the phone’s power button that is on the right of the phone.
Corning Gorilla Glass 5 is used to protect the screen. On the downside, the screen is a bit too big, making it difficult to use the phone with one hand. But it suitable for video streaming and gaming. Those who enjoy big screens probably won’t complain.
Realme equipped the Realme 6 Pro with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 720G SoC. The 720G is said to be the Snapdragon 730G’s slightly scaled-down version. The 730G chipset was used in the Poco X2 as well as the Realme X2.
The 720G is an Octa-core processor with six Kyro 465 Silver core clocking at 1.8GHz and two Kryo 465 Gold cores at 2.3GHz. Meanwhile, the 730G has Kryo 470 cores which are a tad more powerful. However, the good news for gamers is that both of them use the Adreno 618 GPU.
For daily tasks or when switching between different apps, you won’t experience any lag. In terms of gaming performance, users can play heavy games like PUBG Mobile at fairly high settings without any hiccups. After 15 to 20 minutes of playing games, the phone doesn’t heat up too much, which is a plus. So gamers who are on a budget can take a look at this phone.
The smartphone’s base variant has 6GB of RAM with 64GB internal storage. The other two variants are 6GB of RAM/128GB internal storage and 8GB of RAM/128GB internal storage.
The smartphone comes with a 4,300mAh battery, the same one used in the Realme 6. The phone can easily last one day and a half with normal usage including generous using of social media apps, messaging, browsing, clicking some photos, and a half-hour of gaming and watching videos each. That is more than decent, for battery life. What is even better is the smartphone’s bundled charger.
Realme equipped the Realme 6 Pro with a 30W VOOC 4.0 charger that takes only 65 minutes to charge the phone from 0 to 100%. And for this segment, the number is really impressive. The 4,000mAh battery of the Realme XT takes around 87 minutes to charge the phone from 0 to 100% with the VOOC charger. Here, with the Realme 6 Pro, it requires 255 less time, despite the higher capacity battery.
In most conditions, the Realme 6 Pro manages to deliver some crisp shots. The smartphone has a quad-camera setup on the back with a 64MP primary camera, a 12MP telephoto lens facilitating 2x optical zoom, an ultra-wide lens with 8MP, and a 2MP macro lens. The Realme 6 Pro doesn’t have a separate depth sensor.
If you want to, you can capture 64MP images with the primary camera. But in standard mode, it produces 16MP pixel-binned photos. The 64MP mode doesn’t bring any major improvement. However, you may want to use it when you want to crop a section of the photo or print the captured images.
In standard mode, the captured images have quite good quality with ample detail and vibrant but natural colors. Noise levels are kept in check as well. It is best to leave the HDR in Auto mode. You can select from normal, ultra-wide to 2x and 5x zoom. You can change from standard Photo, Video, to Portrait, Night, and 64MP mode.
The Portrait mode works well in separating the background and the subject. You can adjust the blur level manually, depending on your preferences. Whether it is a human or other object, the images are pretty good. Interestingly, in certain scenarios, the smartphone’s standard photo mode also automatically blurs the background.
Since the Realme 6 Pro is still a mid-range phone, don’t expect too much with the 8MP ultra-wide lens. When you want a broader field of view, it’s a great option to have. But the details can’t be compared to the photos produced by the main camera. Photos that are taken in well-lit conditions manage to have a decent amount of detail. However, in low-light conditions, quality drops quickly.
You have 2x and 5x zoom with the telephoto camera. You get optical zoom with the 2x mode and a hybrid/digital zoom with 5x mode. The 2x zoom mode delivers sharp photos with lots of detail. Image shots with the 5x zoom come out pretty decent too. However, for that, you will need to have a really steady hand or a tripod.
The photos from the 2MP macro camera are strictly okay. You can’t expect much from a 2MP camera.
Even when you don’t enable night mode, photos shot in low-light conditions are still quite good. The photos look sharp and still have a good amount of detail. The night mode makes the photos look brighter without going too over the top.
Selfie lovers will enjoy the phone’s front cameras. You have a 16MP lens and an 8MP lens. With only one tap, you can switch between the two easily. The images look sharp while the skin tone is natural. For group selfies, the ultra-wide camera is handy. The front cameras also do well in separating the background.
