Samsung may release a smartphone with an actual zero-bezel screen that doesn’t have a frame around it. The sides of the phone will serve as the additional screen which showcases touch controls.
LetsGoDigital has got some images that illustrate how the phone would look like, which has been sent to WIPO. The images may give you some goosebumps. As a tradition, companies often send additional pictures of the expected product when filing a design patent, not a utility patent like in Samsung’s case.
According to Samsung’s filing, the phone screen is flexible, but it does not detail the sides of the phone except for the icons which are shown in the picture. The patent also hints that other parts such as sensors, speakers, and selfie camera will lie under the phone screen.
As suggested by the picture, it is likely that the phone will have neither a USB-C port nor an audio jack port, which means we can only charge the phone wirelessly. However, you should also remember that this image is filed along with a patent, so inconsiderable details may have been removed.
Furthermore, it is revealed in Samsung’s patent that the phone can come in different forms, namely polygon and rectangular.
While the advancements of technology at present can make these variations possible, Samsung probably is not ready to produce these phones in mass volumes. Nevertheless, it is highly possible that this kind of smartphones will become popular to smartphone manufacturers in the next three or four years.
So far, we are still waiting for Samsung to launch its foldable phone, which is expected to officially come out in 2019. Although Samsung did not become the first company to launch a foldable phone, its product will surely surpass the previously released foldable device which showcased some lags on display when transfer from the folded stage to an unfolded one.
