Over the last 10 years, Samsung has always been a very strong brand in the smartphone industry with more than 2 billion smartphones sold. Coinciding with the launch of its new Galaxy S10 series as well as the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo, Samsung opened a big flagship store in Shibuya, Japan.

But this store will be just as other stores without a very stand-out front, designed by Tokyujin Yoshioka. The designer has covered the facade of the designed building just like a black box with 1,000 Galaxy devices with their screens on. At the first look, it feels like these displays are floating in the air, or like holographic images floating on the glass of the building. But actually, it's all just a visual trick.

As can be seen, Samsung and Yoshioka designed this store in a rather crazy style, and it is playing a tradition of ornamental buildings, architectural follies which were popular in the 18th & 19th centuries that focused more on visual effects than the actual function. For the company, a high wall filled with floating displays that looked like something comes out of sci-fi movies helped them show a powerful visual statement: Samsung was a company being creative in their own way, even often pigeonholed as copying Apple. And when looking at Samsung's building, it is interesting to think about the future in 50 years: what will industrial designers and architects be able to do with buildings when the screens become increasingly cheaper and more popular?

To recall, the Galaxy S10 series was launched in India about two weeks ago. The Galaxy S10 phones are the first from Samsung to feature the hole-punch design that features a cut-out on the display to house the selfie camera. Instead of launching two standard and larger models, Samsung announces four Galaxy S10 versions, including the most affordable Galaxy S10e, the standard Galaxy S10, Galaxy S10+, and Galaxy S10 5G.
