On Wednesday, while unveiling the Galaxy Note 10, Samsung introduced a quick scanning feature which allows users to walk around an object and get a photo-realistic 3D scan of it within seconds.
In a demo in the Unpacked event last night, the 3D scanner app of Samsung generated a virtual version of Booby, a stuffed pink animal. By holding the phone and pacing around the object in a circle and keeping it in a circular guide on the phone’s display, the app could capture every of the object’s angles. It then produces a 3D asset which matches the object’s shape, color, and shadow.
According to the Korean giant, the 3D files can help with making 3D copies, which may pose privacy concerns. In addition, they can be easy, simple assets for AR or VR apps. Through the use of body tracking, the app can mirror anyone’s movements if they’re in the phone’s camera’s frame, matching them when they wave, turn, or dance.
The giant Korean smartphone maker unveiled the feature during its Galaxy Note 10 event held in New York, called the Unpacked event. At a time when phone prices are climbing in the global market, and users are upgrading their phones less regularly, companies like Samsung are turning to other services and technologies to maintain their customer base.
Galaxy Note 10 is an Android-based smartphone, produced and marketed by Samsung Electronics that was released on August 7, 2019. The Galaxy Note 10 has 8GB RAM, 256 GB storage, 3,500 mAh battery and a 6.3 inch, 2280x1080 dynamic AMOLED display. Starting price of Galaxy Note 10 is $949
