Giant chipmaker Qualcomm has finally revealed the latest offering in its Snapdragon 200 series, the new Snapdragon 215. With the aim for enhancing the performance to that of low-end handsets, the Snapdragon 215 is the successor of Qualcomm's Snapdragon 212. As stated by the company, the new chipset will feature new technology that was not available in the previous chipsets in Qualcomm's 200 processor series, and it's also the first chip of the series to be 64 bit.

In terms of raw processing power, the new Snapdragon 215 may be able to work 50 percent faster compared with the Snapdragon 212, which means that low-end devices have been able to carry out a lot of processing at one time.

Qualcomm has revealed the Snapdragon 215

With the launch of Snapdragon 215, low-end devices’ performance is expected to improve significantly. The new chipsets will bring more features to entry-level handsets, for example, Full HD recording capability and support for dual-camera systems.

Aside from being the first 64-bit chipset as mentioned above, there have been several more “firsts” for the 215 Snapdragon. The chip will feature support for two SIM cards with dual VoLTE. Moreover, the 215 will also be the first of its kind to support NFC payments for Android, which supposedly means that you can make POS transactions using 200-series chipset.

Qualcomm Snapdragon 215 will also support the 64-bit version of Android, which includes Android Go, an Android water-down version that performs lightweight applications like YouTube Go and Google Maps Go.

The processor will appear in entry-level devices like the Nokia 2

The Snapdragon X5 will also be included in the chip, which increases the LTE download speeds to 150 Mbps.

All in all, the upgrade appears to be a natural progression for the Snapdragon 200 series. Smartphones that possess the Qualcomm Snapdragon 212 include the Nokia 2. However, there haven’t been a lot of OEMs (original equipment manufacturers) to adopt the new chipset for their budget handsets, a fact that Qualcomm would surely wish to change.
