According to 9to5Google, there will be a more affordable version of the Pixel 3, namely Google Pixel 3a, which is believed to be revealed on the 7th of May. On Google Store, the company might announce news about the Pixel lineup on that day along with the official date for Google’s I/O conference.
We have not yet heard anything credible on the price tag of this new phone, but many people think it may come somewhere in between $400 and $500, including Rezetked, a Russian blog about technology. What we know for sure now is that the Pixel 3a will be cheaper than both the Pixel 3 and the Pixel 3 XL, which cost $800 and $900 respectively.
As the XL line is $100 more than the regular smartphone, as for the case of the Pixel 3 and 3 XL, the Pixel 3a XL might follow the same pattern. About the screen size, the 3a might sport a 5.6-inch display while that of the 3a XL may measure 6 inches. As for their two predecessors, the Pixel 3 and the Pixel 3 XL, the screen sizes are 5.5 inches and 6.3 inches.
According to both Rezetked and Andro News, the unannounced phone might have a plastic cover. They also provided photos of it, which gives us a general idea of what it may look like. If the pictures turn out to be taken of the real Pixel 3a, this cheaper version of the Pixel 3 will not have the glass of its predecessors.
The phone might be powered by either the Qualcomm Snapdragon 670 or 710 chipset, which are of the same quality with the Pixel 3’s Snapdragon 845. Although Google has confirmed none of the rumors, many people agree that the Pixel 3a will take the Snapdragon 670. The latter also has supporters but either way, these two chipsets are on the same level as that of the Pixel 3. For a mid-range device, the phone might have RAM of 4GB.
The most exciting rumor is that the Pixel 3a might feature the same camera setup with the Pixel 3. From what Andro News revealed, the new phone may sport a 12MP snapper while no one can be sure if the two phones have the same sensor or not. However, Google draws power from the software to produce photos rather than relying on the sensor, so if there is a disparity it might not be a problem at all. Pixel 3’s camera has made a name for itself for being one of the best users can find on the market nowadays, so if the rumor about the cameras is true, it will excite a lot of potential buyers as they will have a top-notch camera arrangement at a reduced price.
On the other side, the Pixel 3a may come with a single selfie snapper instead of the dual setup on the Pixel 3. If this is true, we will miss out on the ability to take an ultrawide selfie of the Pixel 3.
The new phone’s predecessor does not feature a headphone jack, and this may change when the Pixel 3a is released. This is another feature that Andro News and Rezetket both agree on.
About where you can get your hands on the latest lineup of the Pixel smartphone, Verizon is for sure, but there is another distributor, which is T-Mobile. This is another change as Google has entrusted the former as the exclusive platform for their Pixel phones for years even though the smartphones you purchase at Google’s Store are compatible with most carriers. According to Android Police, Verizon’s exclusive era is drawing to an end soon as it is believed that both the Pixel 3 and Pixel 3a will be on its platform.
