Just a few weeks ago, Google announced the first Pixel feature drop, in which the company added a lot of new features including better quality for Duo video calls, automatic call screening, etc. But as the first update has come out, Google has likely added another three updates to its Pixel 4.
The most important update, however, is an undocumented change that was first spotted by XDA Developers. It gives the Face Unlock on the Pixel 4 the ability to become more accurate over time.
Currently, the Pixel 4 sometimes takes a picture of the user when they use Face Unlock. Then it will use the photo to update its facial recognition model stored in the phone’s built-in Titan M security processor instead of the cloud.
This update was confirmed as in a recent screenshot of the updated unlock setup, including a line that says the device will occasionally use the user’s face unlock photos for producing improved face models. However, the company hasn’t revealed when the phone will support registering a second face or require users to keep their eyes open like the iPhone does.
The second upgrade, which the company mentioned before, is now given to the Pixel 4. The phone will now support dual-frequency GNSS location tracking. This capability enables the device to receive two signals simultaneously rather than just one from GPS satellite, meaning better location quality and higher accuracy.
This upgrade is expected to enhance Google Maps and give users the most up-to-date as well as accurate coordinates and directions no matter where they’re going.
Meanwhile, the third upgrade is mainly for US users, T-Mobile subscribers specifically. The Pixel 4 will now support eSIMs on Uncarrier, which means T-Mobile users can activate their smartphones without having to insert a SIM card. The upgrade will also allow them to use both the nanoSIM and the eSIM independently for sending and receiving calls, messages, and data.
