One of Samsung’s big hits for 2019 is the upcoming Galaxy S10, also the celebration of its 10th anniversary. The phone is expected to offer a lot of innovative features, including 3D face scanning, multiple cameras, and wireless charging.
However, the Galaxy S10 would not be possible without all of its precedents.
The first Galaxy S
Year: 2010
In 2010, Samsung introduced its first Galaxy S to the world at MWC held in Spain. While Samsung had already produced smartphones before that, the Galaxy S boosted the higher-end segment.
The phone featured a Super AMOLED touchscreen that was 4 inches large, 5MP rear camera, a 1GHz chip, Android 2.1 Eclair, 512MB of RAM and a 1,500mAh battery.
Samsung Vibrant
Year: 2010
This model has different variants that each US carrier sold exclusively. The version sold by T-Mobile featured the same specifications with the global version, supporting 3G.
Samsung Epic 4G
Year: 2010
The version that Sprint sold was outstanding compared with the others in the pack, featuring a QWERTY keyboard which could be slid out under the touchscreen. Different from the rest, this phone offered a rear camera flash, front-facing camera, and 4G speeds. While its internal storage was only 1GB, the phone support external memory card of up to 16GB.
Samsung Captivate
Year: 2010
The difference in AT&T’s version is that it was physically edgier. Though the phone came without a front-facing camera nor a camera flash, it offered internal storage of 16GB and supported 2GB microSD card. One year later, the carrier also rolled out a slide-out keyboard variant, called Captivate Glide.
Samsung Fascinate
Year: 2010
Verizon’s variant had a camera flash and allowed its phone to act as a mobile hotspot. Nevertheless, it gave only 2GB for the phone’s internal storage and no front-facing camera included. Anyway, the phone did support up to 16GB for an SD card.
Samsung Continuum
Year: 2010
The Korean giant quickly produced all the offshoots for the Galaxy, especially those for US carriers, including this version with a sub-display at the phone’s front bottom. The Continuum was an attempt toward the dual-display phone, though discontinued by Samsung.
Galaxy S2
Year: 2011
This model featured a 4.3-inch display. Additionally, the phone offered dual-core 1.2GHz chip, 8MP rear camera, 2MP front camera, and 1,650mAh battery.
Galaxy S2 US variants
Year: 2011
As can be seen in the photo, the versions of AT&T, T-Mobile, and Sprint are on the left, center, and right, respectively. The variants had almost the same screen size and chip speeds and differed in physical designs.
Galaxy S3
Year: 2012
This phone was the first Galaxy break out for real. Not only did Samsung improve hardware specs, but it also gave the phone an impressive pebble shape as well as pearly finish. This was also the first Galaxy model to stay the same across US carriers, the first clue showing Samsung’s plan to go global.
Galaxy S3 Mini
Year: 2013
The S3 Mini was smaller and had stepped-down specifications compared with the S3. However, it joined the mini phone army which was trending at the time. Later, Samsung also released the S4 and S5 Mini.
Galaxy S4
Year: 2013
Despite the toy-like plasticky look, the S4 drew people’s attention for its outstanding features. Apart from the larger 5-inch Super AMOLED screen, the phone offer Full HD quality, a 13MP rear camera, 2MP front camera, a 2,600mAh battery as well as a bunch of software extras.

The phone featured an optical zoom lens on its back, which show how Samsung works towards innovations.
Galaxy S4 Active

This model had expanded core specs in comparison with the S4, offering a tougher exterior along with physical navigation buttons. Its design was water-resistant and its camera had an underwater mode. Since then, Samsung has always released an Active variant annually, including the S8 Active.
Galaxy S5
Year: 2014
The phone, which was a nonessential upgrade from the Galaxy S4 featured a fingerprint reader as well as a heart-rate monitor. Most importantly, the phone was water resistant.
Galaxy S5 Sport

Sprint, a major US carrier, chose this exclusive. Besides esthetic, this model had barely anything better than the S5.
Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge

Galaxy S6 Edge Plus

The S6 Edge Plus, or S6 Edge+ was the larger version of the S6 Edge. Fundamentally, this phone is similar to the Galaxy Note 5, excluding the S Pen. It came with a 5.7-inch curved Super AMOLED display.
Galaxy S7 Edge “Batman phone”

This phone was made to transfer Bruce Wayne’s idea for promoting the Batman video game called Injustice: Gods Among Us. The phone was completely black, offering some themed highlights for software, including Batman skins and ringtone.
Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge
Year: 2016
With a curved, larger display, Samsung charged a higher price compared with the S7. While the S7 screen was 5.1 inches, the S7 edge screen was 5.7 inches. Additionally, both phones delivered an impressive 2K resolution, quick processor, and high-quality photos.
Galaxy S7 Edge Olympic Edition
Year: 2016
There were only 2,000 phones of this edition made, exclusively for fans of the Olympic Games held in Brazil.
Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus
Year: 2017
Both phones featured curved displays with almost no bezels, a fingerprint reader next to the rear camera, and a new button used for Samsung’s voice assistant Bixby.
Galaxy S9 and S9 Plus
Year: 2018
This model is not much an upgrade from the S8. It doesn’t have a portrait mode and its battery life is low. However, it features a dual-camera setup and a large vibrant display.
