6 Innovative Features Coming To Android Phones In 2020

With the Snapdragon 865 from Qualcomm coming around, Android smartphones will benefit from even better features. Here are 6 of them.

Year by year, mobile phones are getting smarter, faster, and more efficient, thanks to all the technological upgrades packed inside, especially processors. For example, photography features like slow-motion videos, or fingerprint and face unlocking all rely on the processor. Now, with the Snapdragon 865 from Qualcomm coming around, Android smartphones will benefit from even better features. Here are six trends for 2020 smartphones with the appearance of the Snapdragon 865.

1. Edit 8K video over 5G

Phones powered by the Snapdragon 865 will be 5G-enabled out of the box, with the capacity to support 8K HD videos, featuring ultra-high resolution hence large files.

For instance, an 8K video that lasts for 30 seconds can take 1GB of memory, which may take you 20 minutes to upload using 4G networks. But 5G will allow you to upload as well as edit such videos faster over the cloud, you can even collaborate with others to edit them while on the go.

2. Two-finger unlock

The sound wave-based in-display fingerprint sensor on the Samsung Galaxy S10 and Galaxy Note 10 has a rocky start. However, Qualcomm now tries again with its 3D Sonic Max fingerprint reader that will be large enough for two fingers.

This new fingerprint sensor is meant to make phone unlock faster as well as matching up data points more secure. You will likely have the option of setting up either one-finger or two-finger unlocking or choose two-finger authentication for certain payment apps.

This will also allow you to capture your heart rate, through the pores, valleys, and ridges on your fingers.

While face unlock is becoming more common, a backup option is great, especially when unlocking phones with the face still have flaws.

3. Higher refresh rates

Smartphone screens are getting faster and faster. While the typical refresh rate is 60 Hz, some handsets have been upgraded to the 90Hz rate or even 120Hz rate. That means smoother graphics for mobile gaming.

However, with the support for up to 144Hz refresh rate, the Snapgradon 865 will also make all screen animations significantly smoother. For example, scrolling up and down on a page will look perfect. Even more, such high refresh rates will make more movements smoother in a video call or Snapchat filter as you’re moving.

4. Google Assistant can now listen to figure your location

Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 will give the Assistant a sensing hub with the ability to listen to your surroundings and get what’s going on there. What that means is you can train your phone to recognize baby cries, glass breaking or gunshots. The phone may give you an alert to check on your baby. Another example is when you’re at the subway, your phone identifies that from the sounds it hears and raise the volume if you’re on a phone call.

The sensing hub will also support several hot words as well as add noise suppression so that the Assistant can hear you from a longer distance.

5. Instant live transcription and translation

The live video transcription was introduced in Android 10 and the Google Pixel 4 had transcriptions with its voice recorder app. In a demo, the feature transcribed sentences into two languages, Chinese and English while keeping up with the speaking speed. Another demo demonstrated the phone translating English sentences, playing back in Chinese to the receiver.

The entire process took place fast on the phone and will be really helpful for those who travel abroad a lot.

6. Your phone will also be a window to the world around you

App developers have been working on AR for years, like Google Maps directions that show users where to go with a giant arrow, but such features require quick response and 5G will help with that.

In a demo, there was a 3D world made from wooden blocks. When passing the phone, you would see an animated world map featuring TikTok videos from various regions popping up as you sweep the device. The idea here is for users to view and choose popular videos from each part of the world on their smartphones.
