Foodtech Unicorn Zomato just announced that it now delivers food to 500 cities in India. But at the beginning of June, the company said that users will be able to use its service in more than 300 cities.
A statement reads:
Zomato CEO, Mohit Gupta emphasized that the metrics of the company including value per order and orders per thousand have proved that the common belief, that the country’s economy depends on Tier-I- and II cities, is wrong.
In the past 12 months, 100% of Zomato’s business was contributed by the top 15 cities. In just 12 months, the growth in these cities has doubled while Tier III along with IV cities contributed 40%.
For wider reach and scale, Zomoto is launching aggressively across Tier-III and IV areas. Some of the areas added to the list include, Shillong (Meghalaya), Osmanabad and Sawantwadi (Maharashtra), Pataudi (Haryana), Daltonganj (Jharkhand), Chittoor (Andhra Pradesh), Silvassa (Daman), Vrindavan and Azamgarh (Uttar Pradesh), Fazilka and Nawanshahr (Punjab), Itarsi and Ashoknagar (Madhya Pradesh), Kodaikanal, Cuddalore, and Kanyakumari (Tamil Nadu), Ankleshwar and Mehsana (Gujarat), Pushkar (Rajasthan), Alappuzha and Malappuram (Kerala).
Last month, the company had made its service available in 120 cities. According to Mohit, this momentum is maintained due to the company’s data-driven strategy to reach out to places that show potential and can meet the company’s set criteria.
The enthusiasm from users as well as the restaurant industry from lesser-known cities have been aligned the company’s “better food for more people” vision.
For example, on the first day of launching in Jharkhand’s Giridih with over 144,000 citizens, Zomato received more than 1,000 orders. In Fazilka in Punjab with 76,492 citizens, each restaurant delivered about 40 orders daily.
A Nagaur-based user made an order worth Rs 6,995, which was the highest order value coming from a Tier-IV city.
