YouTube Music is taking on other music streaming services including Apple Music and Spotify, and in its latest attempt, the platform has launched three personalized playlists. These include Discover Mix, which is similar to Discover Weekly on Spotify, Your Mix, and New Release Mix. The Discover playlist was previously spotted during testing, but all of them are now available to global YouTube Music users.
The company announced its plans for the new playlists during an event this 2019 with Neal Mohan, Chief Product Officer, speaking about the plans to combine human curation with machine learning to improve offerings on the music streaming platform.
The Discover Mix playlist is a lot like Discover Weekly on Spotify, focusing on helping users find new artists and songs they may like. That includes songs that users have never listened to and songs that are not known as much from their favorite artists. However, the difference is that this playlist can use their listening history on both YouTube and the service itself.
The Discover Weekly updates every Wednesday and will offer users 50 songs each week.
Meanwhile, as it’s called, the New Release Mix will bring users all the new songs from their favorite artists as well as others that users may like. This mix drops on Fridays but adds other songs mid-week if necessary.
And Your Mix is a combination of users’ favorite songs and those they haven’t listened to but may like, generated based on their listening habits. This list updates on a regular basis to stay fresh.
The mixes will get better as you listen to music more and more on YouTube Music. But according to YouTube, the platform can personalize mixes right after users select their favorite artists while setting up the app or after they play some songs.
The new mixes come out when Google is making bigger investments into its music streaming service. A couple of months ago, YouTube Music was made the default music app on all new Android phones, replacing Google Play Music. And YouTube Music is reportedly doing better than JioSaavn and Spotify in the Indian market, which is Spotify’s important market though it entered late.
You can now enjoy the new mixes on YouTube Music on the web, Android, and iOS devices.
