On Monday, Google launched the Play Pass, its monthly subscription service which lets people access a library of games as well as other apps on the Play Store, as the company experiments with new pricing. The Play Pass costs Rs 353.68 per month ($4.99), offering over 350 games and apps, including Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, Risk, and Monument Valley.
However, the search giant said that it wants the service to expand to include other kinds of photography, fitness, and health apps. That involves camera apps, weather apps, and retouching apps.
Google’s group product manager Austin Shoemaker said:
Google Play Pass is like Apple Arcade, a subscription service launched last week also at $4.99. However, the Arcade focuses on gaming only and offers around 100 titles. Answering to a question about the Arcade, Shoemaker did not address the competitor specifically, but he said that the Play Pass was much broader.
Google launches the Play Pass at a time when it’s pushing into gaming. This November, the tech giant will release Stadia, a platform where people can stream games from the cloud rather than playing them on a console. Media firms and tech giants have also been conducting broader experiments with subscription services.
For instance, NBC, Disney, and other companies have announced plans to release streaming video services of their own. On the other hand, Google has been working on subscription service Google One for consumers to have more storage for its suite of apps, which include Google Drive and Google Photos.
Users won’t see paywalls, in-app purchases, or ads in the Play Pass. For now, the tech giant is offering a promotion which allows people to pay Rs 141 ($1.99) each month in their first year, along with a free trial for 10 days. Additionally, it will let users share their subscription with a maximum of five family members.
To start using Google Play Pass, subscribers need to open the Google Play app where they’ll see a new tab featuring a ticket logo. The page has featured apps as well as recommendations curated for the service. According to the company, the subscription revenue will be shared with app developers, but it refused to give further details on the money distribution.
It was said by Shoemaker that the service won’t include any exclusive content, for now.
