Windows 10 has crossed the 1 billion mark of global users, according to Microsoft’s statement on Monday. The operating system achieved this milestone months after the tech giant stopped supporting Windows 7, encouraging users to upgrade their devices to Windows 10.
In a Monday blog post, Microsoft’s corporate VP of modern life, search and devices Yusuf Mehdi said that for every seven people, there is one planing, making ideas, creating, moving, executing, shaking, and doing other great things on Windows 10.
Windows 10 is currently present on over 80,000 models as well as configurations of 2-in-1 devices and laptops from over 1,000 different manufacturers, according to Mehdi. The operating system also powers the tech giant’s HoloLens and Mixed Reality devices.
Meanwhile, in the business world, all 100 percent of the Fortune 500 are using devices running Windows 10, the corporate vice president said.
Until a decade ago, Windows was the dominant platform in the world. however, Android and Apple then rose to beat Windows as they arrived on mobile phones. In 2016, iOS was on 1 billion devices around the world while Android hit the 2 billion device mark in 2017.
Released in 2015, Windows 10 is the successor to Windows 8.1. The operating system comes with ongoing new builds, which are free for all users. One of the best features of this Windows version is that it supports universal apps. Universal apps can run across several Microsoft products including Mixed Reality, Surface Hub, Xbox One, embedded systems, smartphones, tablets, and PCs.
