Samsung has decided to stop making LCD panels in China and South Korea by the year-end, according to a spokeswoman from the company on Tuesday.
Samsung is a unit of Samsung Electronics, which said last year that it suspended one LCD production line in Korea due to the decreasing demand for this type of screen as well as a supply glut. In its statement, Samsung said that it will supply the ordered LCD panels to customers by year-end with no problems.
In October 2019, the Korean tech giant said that it would invest $10.72 billion in facilities as well as research for upgrading a production line as it struggles with oversupply while the global demand for TVs and smartphones reduce.
In the next five years, the company will focus its investments in converting an LCD production line in South Korea into a mass production facility for more advanced quantum dot displays.
Samsung has two production lines for LCD panels in its factories in South Korea along with two factories in China that make LCD panels only.
The tech giant hasn’t decided what will happen to its factories in China, according to the spokeswoman. Meanwhile, LG Display also said earlier this year that it will suspend the LCD TV panel production in Japan by the end of this year.
LCD screens used to be popular, featuring on every smartphone. However, with technology advancements, OLED, AMOLED, etc., have come out as better solutions for smartphone displays, which is why the demand for LCD panels has gone down.
