We have not had enough time to get familiar with smartphone cameras capable of shooting 4K videos, and Qualcomm has recently released an 8K video it claimed shot with a camera phone.
There is no information on which phone it was, but one thing we can be sure of, the device packs Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 865 5G chip. Other supporting parts are the Spectra 480 image signal processor of the same company and a Sony IMX586 image sensor.
The camera has indeed captured nicely the rocks, the mountains, the rivers, but everything was shown on a 4K screen.
It is a fact that having an 8K video is useless unless one has access to an 8K-capable screen. However, releasing this kind of video is a message Qualcomm wants to send to users: 8K is possible on phone running on its Snapdragon 865 chipset.
One of the best-known smartphones that will come equipped with this chip is the Samsung Galaxy S20 lineup, which is scheduled to be introduced on the 11th of February.
It will come as no surprise that the video Qualcomm made public was captured by the Galaxy S20 itself. However, in theory, any other smartphone with similar capacities are capable of shooting an 8K video, at least if Qualcomm’s claim is to be believed.
For a regular user, this might not be something practical at all. 4K TVs are out but they have not been widely embraced. 8K screens are also possible but we might have to wait for a few years before we can see their adoption.
Even if you get your hands on an 8K TV, the content available at that high resolution is still scarce. So even if you can shoot an 8K video with the 2020 smartphones, chances are, there are not many displays for these footages.
