There was a gangraping case of four male students from a school in Dehradun, in which the victim was a girl classmate on September 19.
The four criminals admitted watching porn videos before they did the crime to their classmate. Recognizing how adult contents could have negative effects, the Uttarakhand High Court has urged the central government to enforce the ban on pornography which is already existed.
What's happening here?
The existing ban on pornography is included in the Department of Telecommunications’ July 31 2015 circular. Following the circular, the Internet Service Providers (IPS) were directed to stop providing access to any adult content on the internet. Acting chief justice Rajiv Sharma and justice Manoj Tiwari from the division bench claimed that the ban on these pornographic sites is seriously needed due to the negative influences they could bring to children mind.
Moreover, the Internet Service Providers are also requested to block all digital form of the pornography’s transmission or publication. Under Section 25 of the 2000 IT Act, whoever tries to break the ban will lose their licence.
What now?
However, the enforcement of pornography ban can’t be issued outside Uttarakand by the High Court, but DoT can. Therefore, the Center could change its focus and restrict pornography in all kinds of forms, especially if it finds the pursuit of this issue can benefit the public.
Meanwhile, there are questions popping up in these people’s minds about the ban. It is hard to think of the reason why the ban has existed since the year 2015, but was not enforced until the recent terrifying gangrape happened.
Another doubt people are having is whether the ban can make even the slightest change or not. It is simple to block porn websites, but accessing a VPN service is easy too. In fact, there exist a lot of free services that you can access with no download required. So what's the point of enforcing the ban, or is it just something to cover the fact that we're struggling with the issue?
Nevertheless, it may be better of if we stop teaching young men that females are less than human and men should be told to treat women with respect when they're at it.
