Last year, we had news saying that HTC were to exit from the smartphone market in India. Plus, the company would not be making phones anymore for consumers in India. In fact, we have seen many high-positioned executives of the company exited the country.
For now, a recent online report is saying that they are making a plan for a comeback.
HTC Wants To License Its Brand In India Again
The Economic Times says that the Taiwanese smartphone maker is in discussion with local smartphone manufactures to make its brand return to the smartphone market in India. According to the report with quotes from 3 senior executives in the industry, HTC has been involved in this plan with Karbonn, Lava, and Micromax. They plan to license the brand to these Indian tablets, mobile accessories, and smartphones makers.
Apparently, HTC wants to earn a new royalty based revenue stream with this business model. At the moment, it is selling some old smartphone models on different e-commerce portals. The report suggests that this discussion between HTC and India manufacturers are already in the late stages. Plus, there is a possibility that Karbonn and Lava will cooperate in bidding for the brand license of HTC.
A Chance To Enter 10,000 Rs-Plus Smartphone Segment
In the report, a particular executive was quoted saying that the company used to compete in the 10,000 Rs-plus smartphone segment of the market. Therefore, this brand license would help Indian smartphone manufacturers to re-enter this segment. Currently, this segment is the fastest-growing one with lots of competitors such as Vivo, Oppo, Samsung, and Xiaomi.
An executive from HTC said that they are looking for strategic options in the Indian market, and they will announce some news on this matter soon.
