Baby Shark, the hugely popular children’s song with catchy tunes, has just become YouTube’s most-watched video of all time.
The video – recorded by a South Korean company called PinkFong, has amassed 7.04 billion views, dethroning Despacito, Luis Fonsi’s Latin pop hit. If played back-to-back, the total time it has been running is 30,187 years.

It’s believed that the Baby Shark has brought PinkFong around $5.2.
It takes the video four years to come on top but the song itself dates back much further than that. Some people believe the song originates from summer camps in the US during the 1970s.
Another theory said the song was composed in 1975 when Jaw – a Steven Spielberg’s box office hit became popular around the globe.
The song has several variations, one with the protagonist dies and another with one of the surfer has an arm bitten off the shark.
Its French and German versions, Bebe Requin and Kleiner Hai respectively, created a similar effect in Europe in 2007.

However, none of the versions can compete with PinkFong’s interpretation, which was sung by Hope Segoine – a then-10-year-old singer.
The catchy “doo doo doo doo doo” and dance moves were a trend in South Korean with famous bands including Girls’ Generation, Blackpink, and Red Velvet incorporating them into their performances.
Following the #BabySharkChallenge which has the participation of everyone, from Josh Groban, Cardi B, to Indonesian farmers, PinkFong released another video called Baby Shark Dance featuring two kids dancing to the music.

The song is so addictive to children that the video quickly climbed the ladder of YouTube’s most-watched videos.
According to Jamie Oh – marketing director of PinkFong, other nursery tunes tend to be cute and slow, as oppose to Baby Shark, which is very bright and accompanied by fun moves.
Prison Torture Claim
SmartStudy – PinkFong’s parent company, tangled in a lawsuit last year with Jonathan Wright, a children’s songwriter. Wright recorded a similar song in 2011 and claimed ownership of it.
In response to the accusation, SmartStudy said their Baby Shark was made based on a chant that has been passed to the public domain. The Korean Copyright Commission is still considering the lawsuit.
Last month, the song was the center of yet another controversy as some people claimed the song was used to torture inmates of a prison in Oklahoma.
Some court documents said five inmates were handcuffed and forced to face the wall. They stood like that for two hours listening to Baby Shark playing on repeat.
However, there are instances when the song was used for good purposes. Last October, Eliane Jabbour, and her son were caught in the middle of a demonstration in Lebanon. The mother was afraid that the protesters would scare the 15-month-old baby boy, who just woke up.

However, much to her surprise, the protesters sat around the car to sing Baby Shark to calm the baby down.
