Being a full-time YouTuber or doing business on this platform has long been an attractive career for many people because of not only the flexible schedule but also the potential huge income.
There’s no denying that the numbers of views and subscribers play a crucial role in achieving success and earning money as they indicate how influential a channel is. However, rather than putting effort and mind to create quality products, many people have come up with workarounds and loopholes to take advantage of the system.
One of the most common ways is using hundreds, even thousands of phones to increase the number of views for videos. This method is often referred to as “click farm,” which has surged in China and expanded to other countries. Click farm has even become a service available to those in need.
As for the following photos, a Facebook account named N.H.M posted in a large group about YouTube as well as on his wall, introducing the click farm service he’s setting up. He bought hundreds of phones, which are arranged on multiple shelves in a room, synced and connected to a host for control.
Typically, the phones used for this service are secondhand devices as long as they work normally without errors because they are cheap and can be used immediately. Besides, a server has to be set up with automatic features to follow a pre-determined procedure. Sometimes, the service owner even has their own software written to optimize efficiency, helping them take over other competitors in the same business.
In China, this service has boomed as a huge field of the internet with some large-scale systems consisting of thousands of devices. Their main purposes are to increase the rank, reviews, and downloads for applications on app stores, especially new startups who want to impress investors and rise to the top trending. All the phones in a click farm system will download an app over and over again or make automatic reviews following pre-programmed commands. The same mechanism is used for increasing views, likes, and comments on videos as well as posts.
This service is currently illegal in China, but it has reached other countries like India, Bangladesh, Indonesia, and the Philippines. Apple has regularly updated its algorithm on the App Store to automatically spot click farm and remove fake reviews. However, click farm owners are working relentlessly to come up with workarounds by changing how the server works or the code.
