Initially, the Google Maps AR function got demoed at the Google I/O 2018. Later on, got a tease in the initial 2019, but without any date of launch.
A few months ago, Google announced the Pixel 3a, along with a preview of the new AR navigation function in Google Maps.
What is it?
Google Maps AR lets the user use augmented reality which helps with navigation while walking. It relies on the rear camera of the smartphone to identify the users' location. Then, it superimposes the details and directions on the phone's display instead of only showing the user with a map.
AI can identify what the user sees and GPS puts their position on the map. Eventually, Google Maps AR helps people know where to go as it points them in the correct direction to make sure they are heading the right way.
How to find the AR function in Google Maps
It's easy to find Google Maps AR.
- Firstly, search for the place you're walking to.
- Choose walking.
- Now, tap on "Start AR" which is at the end of the page.
How to use Google Maps AR
As soon as you tap on "Start AR," you will launch the AR page and get the best route calculated. The directions begin along with the typical voice instructions.
In case you are pointing your phone in the wrong way, you will either see a big arrow directing you in another direction or a small indicator at the screen's edge. You need to move the phone around to see where it's telling you to go and follow the indicator. The AR function will also display road names along with distances and major turnings so that you keep going in the right way.
Keep the smartphone up and point it at the street in front to see the instructions of AR function. But Google Maps AR will warn you to put the phone down, and in case you don't, the screen will get blanked out until you put the phone down.
Note: AR navigation will not work if Google Street View is not available in your area.
When will it launch?
Google Maps AR will likely come to Pixel phones first, then to other devices. But the exact launch date remains unknown.
