Pairing an Apple Watch with an Android smartphone is not rocket science. It can be done although it's not being advertised. But it has lots of limitations. It is stated on the Apple website that an Apple Watch can only be synced with an iPhone. This statement is almost true, as pairing apps exists only on iOS. However, an LTE Apple Watch can work with Android too.

So if you have to switch to an Android phone but still want to hold on to the Watch, here's how.

How to pair the Apple Watch with the Android smartphone

What we are going to do is pairing the Watch with the iPhone, set up everything so that it is working. Then, enable the Airplane mode on the iPhone, remove the SIM card, and put it into the Android smartphone, find an LTE signal (a strong one). There is no guarantee this is working, however.

This process requires unlocked phones as you will move the SIM cards. So unless you own two SIMs on the same carrier, make sure your phones are unlocked. Now, follow these steps:

  1. Set up the Apple Watch with the iPhone.
  2. Now, make one or two test calls to check whether everything is okay or not.
  3. Turn on the Airplane mode on the iPhone, or turn it off to not let it reach out.
  4. Now turn the Watch off.
  5. Move the SIM card from the iPhone to the Android handset then boot it.
  6. Now turn your Apple Watch on.
  7. Wait till the 'Disconnected' notification disappears from your Watch.

Initially, the Watch took some time to connect as the signal strength was bit fuzzy. However, a walk outside to the strong signal helped Apple Watch connect very fast as well as improved call quality.

Limitations

The advanced functions of your Apple Watch won't be in further use. The SmartWatch application will not be accessible on the Android smartphone. Making and receiving calls, along with asking basic questions from Siri, will be the only tasks done. Using voice command, you will only be able to make calls to the person whose contact is saved on the SIM card, not on the phone.

Connecting an Apple Watch with an Android phone will also affect battery life. Not only does Apple Watch have a not good battery life, but the continuous use of LTE would also make the situation worse. The battery won't be able to last for a long time.
