Tom Scott, a Youtuber, just made public a video where he managed to stop a laser beam midair with his bare hand. While doing so, he asked the public: “Can this burn me?” The answer is yes by the way.
In the video, the YouTuber wore protective glass and stood facing the laser machine. Of course, laser beams do not travel this slow so he could see and react to it. What we can see is that the laser stops and hovers. Scott used his hand to prove that the laser is legit.
However, this is just a trick. Scott and his guest, a laserist named Seb Lee-Delise (yes it is a real job) explained how they manage to pull the show off. During his career, Lee-Delise has set up laser shows and effects all over the world. For Scott’s performance, what he used was a rolling shutter camera, a laser machine, and C++ programming.
The laser beam travels in really fast pulses and these pulses are programmed to make them seem like they are dashed lines. In the video, Lee-Delise said that he was not the first to take advantage of rolling shutter to create laser effects. However, what he achieved is cool and dramatic.
We don’t know if you can recreate the same effects using other laser things like the pointer the cats are so obsessed with. But do not try the same thing at home, laser in the video is real and it is dangerous.
