After videos showings visitors playing songs and dancing inside the Golden Temple went viral on social media platforms, the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) has put a ban on TikTok. Visitors are no longer allowed to record videos here.
Starting from February 8, devotees could see posters from the SGPC inside the Golden Temple complex, telling them not to use TikTok inside the Harrmandir Sahib.
This move comes one day after the Akal Takht’s head priest Giani Harpreet Singh, had said that they would consider banning mobile phones if visitors did not stop shooting TikTok videos inside the sacred site.
TikTok, owned by ByteDance, is a popular short-video platform among youngsters. In India, there are around 200 million users.
The head priest said:
He noted that some of the visitors, when being stopped from taking photos inside the Golden Temple complex, even argued with the workers.
The SGPC has already banned photography and videography to avoid the spiritual atmosphere being disturbed.
A few days ago, three girls visited the temple and shot a TikTok video with a Punjabi song as the background music. After that, the video went viral on social media, thus pushing the SGPC to take action.
It was the second time such an incident happened. Back in Jan, a police complaint was filed against a girl for shooting a dancing video while she was visiting the Darbar Sahib complex.
