The TikTok Tug-of-War: Trump’s 2025 Moves and What’s Next

TikTok’s hanging on, thanks to Trump’s delays, but it’s not out of the woods. A deal depends on smoothing things over with China and dodging legal trouble.

TikTok’s still kicking in the U.S., but it’s caught in a messy fight as President Donald Trump tries to sort out national security worries, his own political game, and some serious bad blood with China. Here’s what went down in 2025, plus a guess on how long this mess will last and if a deal’s in the cards.
The 2025 Timeline: Extensions and Holdups
January 17–19: Quick Blackout, Trump to the Rescue
On January 17, the Supreme Court backed the Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act (PAFACA), which told ByteDance to sell TikTok’s U.S. arm by January 19 or get banned. TikTok shut down for a bit, but Trump, fresh in office, signed Executive Order 14166 on January 20, hitting pause on the ban for 75 days until April 5. TikTok bounced back fast, though Apple and Google dragged their feet on putting it back in their stores over legal worries.
February: App Stores Get On Board
By February 13, Trump convinced Apple and Google to restore TikTok by promising no fines. Some folks, like Rep. Mike Gallagher, called the order shaky since PAFACA needs solid sale progress for delays, and there wasn’t much to show.
April 4: Another Delay
No deal by April 5, so Trump pushed the deadline to June 19 with another executive order. A plan for U.S. investors to take over with ByteDance keeping a small piece fell through, thanks to China saying no and Trump’s 34% tariffs on Chinese stuff. Things got messier when Trump canned a National Security Council guy handling the talks.
May–June: Talks Stall, Another Extension Coming
Vice President J.D. Vance reached out to buyers like Perplexity AI, but China’s need to sign off and trade fights slowed everything down. Trump said in May he’d likely extend the deadline again past June 19. A June 6 Wall Street Journal piece and X posts back this up.
Current Situation: June 18, 2025
TikTok’s up and running as the June 19 deadline looms, with Trump ready to give it another 6 days. He’s pushing for a U.S.-led deal, but China’s not budging, and legal questions about his orders are piling up. Security folks are still nervous about Chinese influence. On X, some cheer Trump for keeping TikTok alive; others think he’s just playing favorites with big donors like Jeff Yass. TikTok’s CEO Shou Chew, who was at Trump’s inauguration, is playing nice to keep things going.
Prediction: How Long and Will a Deal Go Through?
This could drag on for 6–12 months (December 2025–June 2026). Talks are stuck, China’s approval is a pain, and courts might throw out Trump’s extensions. A deal’s got a decent shot—say 60%—with U.S. companies taking the lead, but if China digs in or security concerns win out, a ban’s still possible.
