ThisPersonDoesNotExist.com Uses AI To Create Endless Fake Faces

An Uber software engineer creates a website called ThisPersonDoesNotExist.com to study real images and generate fake visuals.

The capability of AI to create fake visuals is not yet recognized. However, a website called ThisPersonDoesNotExist.com can deliver a persuasive and quick education on this.

Philip Wang, an Uber’s software engineer, is the man behind this website. He utilizes research from Nvidia, which was released last year, to generate endless fake portraits. The website’s algorithm is trained on an enormous database of real images. Then it uses a neural network called GAN (generative adversarial network) to create new examples.

In one of his Facebook posts, Wang wrote:

Ian Goodfellow, a researcher, was the original inventor of the AI framework which powers the site. While Nvidia’s algorithm, known as StyleGAN, was recently made open source. And it has proved to be greatly flexible. Even though this version of the website is trained to create human faces, in theory, it actually can imitate any source.

Researchers are already in the process of experimenting with other subjects like graffiti, fonts, and anime characters.

The great power of algorithms such as StyleGAN has been one controversial topic. On the one hand, it is no doubt a helpful tool to create creative applications like virtual worlds as well as assist illustrators and designers with their work.

On the other hand, there are obvious downsides. As we have read about deepfakes (which exploits GANs to make consensual pornography), the ability of these algorithms in manipulating and generating realistic images will greatly influence modern societies’ perspectives on trust and evidence. The software of these kinds could be exceptionally handy in setting up political propaganda and influencing campaigns.

ThisPersonDoesNotExist.com is just the very beginning of this new kind of technology.
