Electric bikes are not only more environment-friendly than gas-powered cars, but they are also easier to park, especially when the population is growing fast on limited land. And the University of Tokyo has created an electric bike, called Poimo, which doesn’t even need a parking space because you can just stack it in your backpack.
Inflating Poimo is as easy as inflating an air mattress. The electric bike is made from flexible thermoplastic polyurethane and you can need to pump it to less than 10 PSI for it to support an average person’s weight. There is also a hand pump that you can carry everywhere to pump the electric bike in case you don’t have an electric pump available. Though, pumping using hands will take a longer time.
The electric bike cannot carry you immediately after being inflated. You have to install a few components including the battery, a brushless electric motor, the front and back wheels, and a wireless controller that’s integrated into separate handlebars. The whole package is about 5.5 kilograms heavy, but the creators say they can reduce the weight significantly if and when Poimo electric bike can be made for consumers.
An inflatable structure can have a lot of advantages over a rigid frame. For example, the range and battery life would be longer due to its lighter weight, or in case of repairing, it would be easier and cheaper to replace parts. Also, while the inflatable structure of the Poimo is sturdier than expected, it may make an accident less seriously if you hit a pedestrian.
