The Shocking Truth: Up To 69% Of Pakistanis Have No Idea About Internet

Since its appearance until now, the Internet has become too familiar with every household in the world. Hence, you must be surprised when knowing that almost 70% of Pakistanis are completely unaware of the Internet.

According to Dawn news, the Sri Lanka-based think-tank, LirneAsia conducted an ICT survey with a scale of 2,000 Pakistani households from October to December 2017. The participants would answer the questions pertaining to the use of the Internet and ICT services.

The objects of the survey included residents at the age between 15 and 65. They would represent for 98% population in Pakistan.

The CEO of LirneAsia, Helani Galpaya reported that up to 152 million cellular subscribers didn’t know anything about the subscribers. In other words, they are unaware of the Internet. Those may be the rich or the poor, men or women.

The issue doesn’t only occur in Pakistan, but it is also available in many other Asian countries. According to a study, only 30% of those in these countries know something about the technology.

Among the participants in the survey, just about 17% said that they were using the Internet. For those who don’t use it, they even don’t know about its existence.

One more fun fact, the difference between users in the rural and ones in the urban in Pakistan is just 13%. That is the smallest rate found in the Asian countries that took part in the survey.

In addition, the Pakistani internet gender gap was 43%, of which, male users are more dominant than female users. The gap in India and in Bangladesh is 57% and 62%, respectively.

The report also revealed that only 22% of users were using smartphones while 25% of those own handsets that can connect to the internet. The rest people (occupied 53%) are using phones without internet capacity.

The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (a.k.a PTA) didn’t give any feedback about this case although there is an obvious conflict between the report’s discovery and its claims of maximum telephone density.

Finally, PTA added that the result of a survey conducted by a private organization couldn’t represent for the whole telephone density in Pakistan.
