Researchers at the Center for Advanced Systems and Technology at the University of Tehran have unveiled the 4th version of Surena, their humanoid robot. The researchers have worked on this version for four years, they unveiled the original version more than a decade ago. The video in this article will show you what the Surena can do.
As can be seen in the video, the humanoid robot can balance on one foot, drill through a wall, write its name, and grab a water bottle, among other tasks. It can even take a selfie with other people.

Dr. Aghil Yousefi-Koma, the leader of the research, mechanical engineering professor, said share his expectations with the project. He said that one of the most important goals for the fourth version of Surena is making the robot better interact with the environment.
This may not look like a huge goal, but it’s no easy building a robot with such capabilities that Surena has right now. While researchers are attempting to make robotic hands that can do what the human hand can do, Surena seems to be moving closer to that point.

Surena IV was unveiled in 2019 but the video recording that just came out. While Surena IV cannot do parkour like the Atlas robot from Boston Dynamics, it comes with other more subtle developments that are worth the attention. Its balance capability has been improved, it can now interact with more objects, and the robot is closer than ever to being able to do almost everything a typical human can do.
Robotics development varies in ways and directions. For example, Boston Dynamics focuses on the most flashy robots regarding what they can do, Sophia robot tests the limit of AI as well as how much can a robot be like humans. Surena is like Asimo, which Honda retired a few years ago, as it demonstrates how well robots’ motor skills can develop.
In terms of design, Surena is somewhere in between Asimo and Sophia. Surena has a hint of a face, featuring swirling lines. Surena has a forehead that gives us a distinctly alien feel, reminding us that robots may never be able to replace humans completely.
Yousefi-Koma said that Surena acts as a symbol of technological advancement towards peace and humanity.
