When the world is struggling to stop the spread of the novel Coronavirus, rumors of India selling its Statue of Unity, the world’s largest sculpture, has taken the Internet by storm.
However, the listing on OLX, which sells the statue for $4 billion, is fake. That price makes the $450 million price tag of the Salvator Mundi painting by Leonardo da Vinci seem like nothing.
The ad posted online wrote that the statue was sold to raise money for healthcare equipment and hospitals.
Some think that the listing is purely for sarcasm purposes, given the fact that the Statue of Unity once came under criticism for its expensive cost. Whatever the motive, Indian authorities, who have been trying to fight fake news ever since the pandemic struck India, have filed a case against the person behind this ad.
So far, there is no evidence of any collector showing interest in the world’s largest sculpture. But who knows, if the listing continues to stay online, there might be someone with enough disposable income who is willing to buy it.
The Statue of Unity is the work of Ram V .Sutar, and it was introduced in 2018. It portrays Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, India’s first deputy prime minister, who played an important role in uniting the country after the 1947’s Partition.
The $4 billion asking price might sound huge to you but compared to what India had paid to have the statue made, the con artist seems to have underestimated the sculpture’s real value.
To erect the statue, India had to pay $430 million, around 29.9 billion rupees. But that is not all, the process took four years to complete.
