Satellites Might Be Armed With Lasers And Guns By 2030

The French Ministry of Defense shared its plan to send nano satellites into space to guard vital objects, as well as the technology to replace the lost ones

Recently, Emmanuel Macron, the French President, announced that a space force would be formed to protect the country’s satellites. And with the latest news about France’s Minister of Defense made public a plan to create nano satellites with lasers and guns, we can be sure that France is serious about its space command.

According to Minister Florence Parly, the country will allocate about €700 million of the military budget to this new plan. It is projected that by 2025, €4.3 billion would be spent. That much money will be used for the upgrade of Syracuse military communications satellite network, which is currently under French Navy command.

What the French military wants is to equip satellites with cameras to detect enemies first, and then the next generation will have lasers and submachine guns to assault or neutralize other satellites.

The Ministry of Defense also shared its plan to send a swarm of nano satellites into space to guard some vital objects, as well as technology to replace the lost ones fast. According to Le Point, the system is expected to be rolled out by 2030.

Parly said that the ultimate goal was not to take out the enemies. He also made known that if the country found out about a hostile act from another country, it would be able to respond quickly. More importantly, this plan to equip satellites with guns and lasers will not violate the Outer Space Treaty, which strictly bans weapons that can cause mass destruction. Along with this project, France also announced plans for a space academy and a space campus to train future staff.

With risks like jamming, cyber attack, and espionage attempts, in short, all of the acts that can compromise national security, the frontier for military acts have been expanded outside of the Earth's boundaries.
