Inmates in Uttar Pradesh prisons are now making masks to help contain COVID-19.
According to the Mathura jail, they plan to manufacture 500 masks made by the inmates and distribute them to other prisoners in Uttar Pradesh. The inmates make the masks on Saturday and Sunday.
Anand Kumar, director general of prisons, said that 55 out of 71 prisons in the state has start making masks according to Government doctors’ recommendation. The remaining 16 jails, which do not have the necessary equipment for manufacturing will get masks made in other jails.
The DG said that the in-house trainers have been asked to manufacture masks with the available resources. If there is a shortage of raw materials, they will seek for more from the markets.
Other district prisons in Ghaziabad, Gautam Buddha Nagar, Barabanki, and Firozabad have also started making masks.
In a bid to prevent COVID-19 from spreading in prisons, inmates who are serving their time in 71 jails have been instructed to distribute soap among other prisoners and install hand sanitizer dispensers.
The inmates are also required to practice social distancing, whenever they communicate with each other, they must be at least one meter from others.
He said that while wearing masks do not mean that one is safe from COVID-19 but they are the instruments to maintain hygiene.
Uttar Pradesh prisons have already been over-crowded and wardens have been asked to raise awareness about the spread of the Coronavirus. They are also required to send daily updates to the headquarters. Prisoners with serious illness will be transferred to the district hospitals.
