As concerns over the COVID-19 outbreak have been heated up both in the society and on media, people in the U.S now have to face other worries that include the shortage of medical stuff like hand sanitizers. The state of New York recently announced that it will make these products on its own to meet the needs of them, citing that it’ll be hiring prisoners for the production – the news came after New York Governor Andrew Cuomo officially confirmed it on Monday.

As per Cuomo, inmates at correctional facilities across the state can make 100,000 gallons of sanitizer liquid per week (approximately 380,000 liters). The spread of COVID-19 in this country has resulted in hand sanitizers being out of stock while the prices go sky-high.
Last week, authorities in New York already released an emergency status due to the skyrocketing number of infected patients in the state. Also known as coronavirus, the widespread disease has seen 142 cases tested positive so far. People, therefore, are encouraged to take care of themselves with instructions from public health officials, especially when it comes to handwashing with hand sanitizers for at least 20 seconds.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention also notes that a hand sanitizer won’t be able to prevent the coronavirus if it’s alcohol-free. Instead, people need to use products that contain at least 60 percent alcohol.
With 75 percent alcohol, hand sanitizers from New York will be rolled out to schools, prisons, government agencies, and transit agencies as well.
