Along with China, Italy, South Korea, Iran has been hit hard by the epidemic. Lawmakers and senior officials have been infected including Eshaq Jahangiri, the Iranian Vice President. An adviser of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei also died from the virus.

Iran has asked for an emergency funding of $5 billion from the International Monetary Fund in the battle against the COVID-19 outbreak.

Media reports have accused the Iranian government of not being forthcoming about the country’s death toll and masking the outbreak’s devastating scale.

And the expansion of mass graves further underscores why people are feeling skeptical about the official death toll.
