India is known for having a serious child pornography issue. Although pornography is completely banned by the country, India is still one of the world’s biggest consumers and contributors to child abuse content.
But the latest data has unveiled an alarming and disturbing trend, especially when the nation has been put under lockdown since March 23. The India Child Protection Fund reveals that there has been a surge in searches for “child porn,” “teen sex videos,” and “sexy child.” From March 24 and 26, 2020, Pornhub witnessed an increase in traffic from India by 95%.
Bhuvan Ribhu, the son of Nobel Laureate Kailash Satyarthi set up the ICPF in January 2020 to support NGOs in dealing with children's exploitation.
This high demand for child pornography has been flagged by the organization as it could put children in danger. The spike indicates how millions of child pornography addicts, child rapists, and pedophiles have migrated online, turning the Internet into an extremely unsafe environment for children.
Without strict actions, this could cause a drastic rise in children-related sexual crimes. Over the last few weeks, international agencies like the United Nations and End Child Prostitution and Trafficking, the Europol have reported that child pornography addicts and pedophiles have put more effort into luring children who are staying at home and spending more time on the Internet.
Some of the new trends include cyber-trafficking, grooming, sexting, sextortion, child sexual abuse live streaming. A vast majority of users were searching for generic CSAM content which involves “school girls sex.” More disturbingly, the demand leaned more towards violent images and videos. 18% searched for videos with children tortured, choking, bleeding, screaming, or in pain. And the demand for this type of content grew 200%, meaning Indian men are no longer interested in generic child pornography and want violent and exploitative content.
