Siemens Ltd is now the indigenously-made propulsion system supplier for Indian Railways. Their main goal is to upgrade all current and future electric locomotives.
Improving Indian Railways
From now on, Indian Railways is going to use 9,000 HP electric locomotives instead of the old 6,000 HP series. Siemens stated that the new 9,000 HP electric locomotives will include some major upgrades. In fact, they will have an Indian-made integrated propulsion system, for the first time. Furthermore, the steel tank transformer is also indigenously-designed.
Expected bonuses
Siemens predicted that Indian Railways will have a huge 50 percent boost in the haulage capacity, using the new locomotive model. Thus, the industry can expect a significant improvement in the speed and rolling stock assets usage.
The technology focuses on saving the cost of traction energy. After that, it can aim for further targets like decreasing fuel expenses as well as carbon emissions.
Tilak Raj Seth, the Executive Vice President from Siemens did share his thoughts on the technology. According to him, this improvement definitely marks an important milestone for India.
