This is just one of the unfortunate incidents occurring throughout India after the government allowed the selling of alcohol since May 4th. People have paid no heed to social distancing norms as they have queued up to buy alcohol in large quantities.
After the government relaxed some lockdown measures, Karnataka sold alcohol worth Rs. 45 crores while around Rs. 100 crore worth liquor was purchased in Uttar Pradesh. Despite applying the “special corona fee” of 70 percent levied on liquor sale in Delhi, hundreds of drinkers still queued up outside stores. In the city of Bengaluru, capital of Karnataka state, a man even bought 52,000 rupees worth of alcohol.
The nationwide lockdown order in India was issued on March 25 and has been extended twice, expected to end on May 17. Since May 4th, the Indian government has also decided to use the new system to classify 733 districts based on the number of novel coronavirus cases, the doubling rate of coronavirus cases, and the extent of testing and surveillance. There are three classes: Red, Orange, and Green. Districts classified as Red Zones reported a high number of COVID-19 cases and doubling rate. Meanwhile, Orange Zones have few cases and Green Zones hasn’t reported any new cases in the last 21 days. The government will revise the classification once every week.
At the moment, India has seen 52,952 cases with a death toll of 1,783. The recovery rate in the country is at 29 percent with 15,266 patients being discharged from the hospital.
