“Thanks to” the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic, a lot of activities have been forced to stop. Together with the cancellations of a myriad of events all over the world, the fact that COVID-19 starts to reach its peak and is now making thousands of people stay in their houses. Italy, which has recorded the largest number of victims in Europe, has ordered its population to stay at home now as public institutions after forcing its schools and restaurants to shut down.
Owing to the government’s national curfew, the need for the Internet and related service has increased dramatically. Apart from the increasing need for remote working, the number of people playing video games such as Fortnite and Call of Duty has also risen significantly.
According to Telecom Italia Chief Executive Luigi Guibitosi’s statement on a conference call, an increase of more than 70% of the Internet traffic over their landline network was reported, including the big proportion from online games like Fortnite.
Basing on the calculation, those online games involve a lot of players, which consume an abundance of bandwidth compared to regular browsing, conference calls, and business programs that are used by employees who work online.
Because of Italy’s national lockdown, all shops except for the essential ones have been shut down, which led to an absolute increase in the use of telecommunication services. This is the response provided by Telecom Italia in a call with its investors to solve the customers’ problem of losing internet connection.
Countries around the world are taking steps to prevent the spread of the virus. People are advised not to travel abroad unless necessary and employees are also made to apply distance working. Knowing that people would get nervous as well as boring when staying at home all day long, national telecommunication should help their citizens have a more stable internet connection to let off their steam.
