After the months-long battle against COVID-19, Chinese health authorities announce that the peak of the outbreak has finally passed.

Reports suggest that in China where the virus affected the most, has improved significantly as there has been a decline in new cases.

In early February, amid the outbreak, gymnasiums and exhibition centers were converted into temporary hospitals to treat patients who had mild symptoms.

A report from Reuters also states that all 16 temporary hospitals in Wuhan have officially been shut down.

A video going viral on the internet shows doctors celebrating the shut down of these hospitals.

The temporary hospital in the Jiangxia District of Wuhan was originally a sports center. The makeshift hospital treated 564 patients in total among whom 392 were discharged. The 16 temporary hospitals have received 13,000 patients. It has been over 50 days since the city was under lockdown.

Wuhan Temporary Hospitals Shut Down
All 16 temporary hospitals in Wuhan have officially been shut down.

The virus is believed to have come from Wuhan’s Huanan Seafood Wholesale Market, which is a trading place for wildlife. On 23 January, to prevent the virus from spreading, the Chinese authorities put the city under lockdown. Some airlines have also suspended their flights to mainland China.

China has over 80,000 confirmed cases of COVID-19 and is the most affected country in the world. Among these 80,000 cases, more than 65,000 patients have fully recovered.

Although the peak of the outbreak in China has passed, it is spreading rapidly to other countries in the world. The second-most affected country is Italy with over 17,000 confirmed cases and more than 1,200 deaths, leading to the government put the whole country under lockdown.
