Back in May 2019, the CPCB (short for Central Pollution Control Board) announced that the holy river Ganga’s water could not be drunk directly. A few months later, the UPPCB (UP Pollution Control Board) added that the water was unfit for even bathing.

Explaining their announcement, the UPPCB said that the level of Fecal Coliform and Coliform bacteria in Ganga river water had surpassed the maximum permissible limit (500 MPN/100 ML), standing at 22,000 MPN for Fecal Coliform and 40,000 MPN for Coliform.
The situation has changed as in March when India went into a mandatory lockdown that forces factories along the river banks to close, the quality of Ganga river water has seen a drastic improvement. As stated by some reports, the water is now fit for drinking.
As stated by BD Joshi, an environmental scientist, Ganga water at Haridwar and Rishikesh were now so clean that it is suitable for achaman.
Joshi attributed the cause of this drastic change to the 500% decrease in total dissolved solid, dharamshalas, industrial effluent, and wastewater from lodges and hotels.

Another river that has been saved from pollution when India enters the lengthy lockdown is the Yamuna. The river has seen improvement both in terms of quantity and quality.
As you can see from the pictures all over the Internet, the river which has long been plagued by waste and other types of pollutions is cleaner now.
In addition to that, the recent rain also increased the volume of water. With the river is now more suitable to support living creatures, marine life is returning as well as birds as there are fewer cars on the roads and air quality has been improved.
