For The First Time In Five Years, Delhi Had The Cleanest Day

On August 31, for the first time in five years, the national capital of India had the cleanest day. Delhi’s overall air quality was recorded to be just 41. And since the Central Pollution Control Board started measuring AQI in 2015, this was the lowest data ever.

This was the fourth “good” air day of August with the AQI at or under 50 and this year’s fifth day.

Since AQI was launched back in 2015, Delhi has had no good air days. The situation didn’t improve in 2016 with no clean days being registered.

It was not until 2017 did Delhi begin seeing good air days, particularly on the 30th and 31st of July when the AQI levels fell to 43 and 47, respectively. Then in 2018, no good days were recorded. In 2019, on August 18 and 19, the AQI was at 49.

With four good air days, August has become the cleanest month after AQI was launched. According to officials at CPCB, it is expected that September will have more days with clean air thanks to the rain.

The AQI stood at 50 on August 13 and 20. On August 24, the figure dropped to 45. The first two days have been credited to heavy rain while the last two days were because of good wind speed. March 28 was the year’s fifth clean day. It was the first week the whole country was put under lockdown with the AQI being at 45.
