Even when there is minimal traffic happening on the road, it will take at least 40 minutes to cover the 22-kilometer distance in Delhi. That time will even reach over an hour if minimal traffic becomes a moderate one. What about an emergency situation like an ambulance that carries an organ? To avoid the vehicle getting stuck in the traffic, a green corridor connecting the place between the starting destination and the hospital is usually created.

On this special route, all the street signals are manually operated. Therefore, the vehicle won’t be stopped for the organ to reach its destination as soon as possible.
A post on Twitter from ANI read that a green corridor was set up between Indira Gandhi International Airport and Fortis Hospital which is in Okhla to transport a heart. The heart was brought earlier today from Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh. Thanks to the green corridor, it only took the ambulance 19.5 minutes to cover a 22.5-km distance between the airport and the hospital.
The Indian Journal of Transplantation stated that the main objective of creating these green corridors is to shorten the time it takes to transport the organ between two destinations. Since the preservation time of organs is limited, the entire process, from harvesting to inter-institutional transportation as well as final transplantation surgery needs to be completed within a few hours. Studies show that if we can shorten the time between the harvesting and the transplanting process, there are more chances that the surgery would be successful, emphasizing the importance of early transportation.
