Because Of COVID-19, No More Food From Tourists, Starving Monkey Gangs Raid The Street

As COVID-19 causes a massive drop in the number of tourists to Thailand, hundreds of monkeys got hungry and were seen fighting over one single banana

As COVID-19 causes a massive drop in the number of tourists to Thailand, hundreds of monkeys got hungry and were seen fighting over one single banana.

The primates living in Lopburi in central Thailand used to be well-fed by tourists to the country but since COVID-19 struck and people started avoiding travelling, the monkeys have no one to feed them anymore.

The primates reportedly belong to two rival gangs, one making up of those living in the city and the other are monkeys in temples. They fought to get a banana one monkey was holding.

The video showed hundreds of monkeys targeted the one with the banana on its hand. At first, they seemed to run independently in search for food. But later, when they noticed one monkey has a banana, they started to chase it.

The tension picked up fast as the primates started fighting for the fruit. The locals, who are used to seeing monkeys around, were shocked by the way they behaved that day.

The video was taken by Sasaluk Rattanachai from outside the shop she works. Rattanachai said that these primates looked more like wild dogs and they fought for one single piece of food. She also confirmed that she had never seen them so aggressive before.

According to WHO’s data, Thailand has 70 cases of COVID-19. While this number is small compared to other regions in the world, the tourism sector has taken a big hit.

As stated by the Tourism Authority of Thailand, as of February 2020, COVID-19 outbreak has caused a 44% decrease in the number of tourists to the country, in comparison with February 2019.
